Thanksgiving

I have never liked Thanksgiving.  I don't like the food, the work it takes to have the dinner.  I don't like the traditional food, worrying if my house is clean enough for guests.  When I was young I had the hated football going on...FOREVER.  Not to mention the after dinner clean up.

And I don't get Thanksgiving.  There isn't a day I'm not grateful for something, so why do I need a whole day to focus on stuff I spend the whole year I already appreciate?

But my mind always goes back to Grandma.  Every year I would get a early Thanksgiving meal  to celebrate my November birthday, and every year I would choke that meal down because my grandmother loved Thanksgiving and that was her way of showing she loved me, two Thanksgiving meals.

And as much I dislike Thanksgiving I would give anything to have that old woman in the kitchen, stealing black olives, and making that dreaded dinner, one more time.

So today I am going to be thankful that I had that crazy old woman in my life, and choke down that freaking turkey one more time.

  1. I'm grateful that I like the food, though I do miss my mom's stuffing. I'm grateful to have you as a friend. You take care.

  2. I like Thanksgiving. I always have. As a kid Thanksgiving was always second fiddle to Christmas, as an adult I treasure Thanksgiving more than Christmas. Thanksgiving is short, simple and to the point -- an Autumn harvest feast. It is hard to screw that up into what Christmas has become --an orgy of selling to float the economy. Black Friday indeed. We should be ashamed.

Thanksgiving has a focus on family that trumps Christmas. I also think that there is something to be said for carving out some time to express gratitude for what we have.
